Coach Jose Peseiro’s job to be reviewed after 2024 African Cup of Nations

The fate of Super Eagles‘ coach Jose Peseiro, will be decided by the Federal Government after the Cote d’Ivoire 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.

This was disclosed recently by the Sports Minister, Senator John Owan Enoh.

Despite criticism over recent friendly games and World Cup qualifiers, Enoh said that sacking Peseiro before the upcoming tournament would not be in Nigeria’s best interest.

“I am trying not to be rushed into hasty decisions. I mean, I have tried to be calm because I find out that this sector has passions and emotions and a minister should not be driven by emotions and passions,” he said.

He highlighted the financial aspect, revealing that Peseiro’s contract had expired, and negotiations resulted in a reduced monthly payment until after the AFCON.

The minister acknowledged concerns about the team’s performance but stressed the need for careful consideration, stating, “So, we owe that coach 10 or nine months times $70,000.

“What we did was to now renegotiate that contract and get him to accept $50,000 monthly until after the tournament.”

Enoh further expressed confidence about Nigeria’s chances in the Africa Cup of Nations.

“For a football nation like Nigeria, it goes beyond qualification for the competition. We last won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, and the minimum anybody should expect is that after 10 years, we should be able to win it.”

While addressing the recent World Cup qualifiers’ results that saw the Super Eagles pick just two points in two games, he acknowledged the concerns of the public, but added that the decision about the national team’s future would be made before the next qualification round in June.
